Set in the 1800's, and based on the 1960's TV show, the Wild Wild West introduces us to special government agents James West (Will Smith), and Artemus Gordon (Kevin Kline). West is a gun slinging sly cowboy with an attitude, and Gordon is a brilliant inventor and master of disguise, both prim and proper. Under the instruction of the President, the two must join forces to track down and stop the diabolical genius, Dr. Arliss Loveless (Kenneth Branagh), from tearing apart the United States. Dr. Loveless has kidnapped the world's greatest scientists to concoct an array of weapons and vehicles that are technological wonders even by today's standards.
The Wild Wild West had the potential to be the most entertaining film of '99. However, as is true with most of Hollywood's cash grabs, it came up short. The dialogue is full of un-funny and predictable cliches, and the special effects compare to the blue screening technology of the '80's. A little disappointing, but the last 20 minutes makes up for it all. Wild Wild West rates a 1.5 on my scale.
Starring Will Smith, Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh, and Salma Hayek. Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld
