Chain Breeding (00B8)
The next step is to figure out which Pokemon you want breed, and for
what reason. Do you want a Pokemon for its stats, or to chain breed with
another Pokemon for a specific move? Chain-Breeding is a process in which
you transfer a move from one Pokemon that has a move over to one that
can learn it either via a TM or via it's egg move capabilities (Refer
to the Pokedex for a list of moves a Pokemon can learn via breeding). This,
sometimes, may require several Pokemon just to get to the Pokemon you
want to have the move. Here is a small example:
/-------------------------------------------------------------------------
|THE POKEMON:
|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
|Pokemon 1: Has move you want
|Pokemon 2: Female
|Pokemon 3: Offspring of Pokemon 1 and 2 and Carrier of move from Pokemon
|Main Pokemon: Female and type of Pokemon that you want to give the move
to.
|Main offspring: Pokemon with desired move.
|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
|Pokemon 1 has a move you want for another Pokemon, but you cannot breed
|Main pokemon for it. Pokemon 1 is male
|Pokemon 2 has the capability of learning that move, and can breed with
|Pokemon 1 and your Main Pokemon. Pokemon 2 is female
|Main Pokemon has the capability of learning that move either as
|a egg or TM learned move. Main Pokemon is female.
|Pokemon 1 and 2 will breed, and produce a egg with Pokemon 3. Pokemon 3
|will need to be male so it can breed with Main Pokemon, so you will need
|to breed until you get a Male Pokemon 3. Then, breed Male Pokemon 3 with
|Main Pokemon (Unless it is a baby Pokemon, in which you will need to
|level it up). Then, hatch it and see if you got the Pokemon you want
|with the right move/gender/ability/nature. If not, rebreed Pokemon 3
|and Main Pokemon until you get the desired Pokemon with the right
|specs.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------/
Sounds like a giant process for chain breeding, no? Basically, you will
need to map out everything about a certain Pokemon to get one that is
"perfect", or so you think.
So, what about those who could care less about moves and the various other
hassles of breeding? Well, the minimum you will need to breed two Pokemon
is a Pokemon that is female, one that is male, and they both need to
be in the same Egg Group (refer to the next section, 004F, for details
on egg groups). If they are in the same egg group, then take them down
to the breeding center and drop them off. Depending on if they are
a traded Pokemon and various other things, it may take longer or shorter
to produce a egg. Talk to the man outside to see if the two Pokemon have
produced a egg yet. Once they do, take it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
/ The Hatching Process (00C8)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, the boring part. Once you have your egg, you will need to keep it
in one of your slots in your party for it to gain steps to hatch.
Basically, every type of Pokemon has a amount of steps it needs in order
to hatch. For example, all the starters in D/P need 5,120 steps to
hatch, while a Pokemon such as Dratini needs 10,240 steps to hatch.
As you can see, you can half the amount of steps to 2,560 and 5120
respectively if you have a Slugma in your party.
So, what are some of the best places to hatch Pokemon in D/P? Going from
Twinleaf to Sunnyshore on Bike is about 2100 steps, and that is with
some errors. The Cycling path south of Eternia City is about 200
steps from the top to the bottom and then back to the top again, and
the path near the breeding center in Solceon Town (Going from the part
of Route 209 that has the bike slopes in a straight line through Solceon
Town up to Route 210, past the bike slope, and hitting the wall near
the cafe) to and from is about 250 steps.
So, which one is the fastest? From Twinleaf to Sunnyshore on a bike
with the fastest setting is about 6+ minutes, about 7+ minutes
on the lower setting, and about 7:30+ minutes using B to walk. The
Cycling Path from top to bottom and back to the top was about
15 seconds. The Solceon path that I described above is about 18
second from the bottom of Route 209 to the top of Route 210, and
back again to the bottom of Route 209.
Just to give you a general idea how it fairs step-wise, lets compare
each of them.
Twinleaf-Sunnyshore: 2100 steps (10.5 times the Cycling Road route and
8.4 times the Solceon Route
Cycling Road: 200 (About .10 times the T-S route, and .8 times the
Solceon Route
Solceon Route: 250 (About .11 times the T-S route, and 1.25 times the
Cycling Road Route).
So, when it comes down to it, you would need to ride the Cycling Road
10 times up, down, and up again and one time down to get the same
steps as the Twinleaf-Sunnyshore route, and you would have to do the
Solceon Route 8 times and then half one time to have the same effect
as the T-S route. However, how do they compare time-wise?
Twinleaf-Sunnyshore Route on bike with highest speed is 6+ minutes,
so lets use that one and say it is around 6 minutes and 30 seconds.
Riding the same distance on the Cycling Road is about 2 minutes
and 38 seconds, 3 minutes and 52 seconds faster. The Solceon
Route is about 2 minutes and 55 seconds, 3 minutes and 35 seconds
faster.
So, how does the Solceon and Cycling Road compare? 2:38 when compared
to 2:55 would be a 17 second difference, making the Cycling Road
faster in theory.
How does this all hold up egg-wise? Hatching a 5200 step egg would take
2 and nearly a quarter go arounds using the T-S route (Or about
15 minutes, 7:30 minutes with a beneficial ability).
On the Cycling Road Route, hatching a 5200 step egg would take 26 times
from the top, bottom, and back to the top again (About 6:30 minutes, or
3:15 minutes with a benificial ability).
On the Solceon Route, hatching a 5200 step egg would take about 21 times
from the bottom of Route 209 to the top of Route 210 and back down again
(about 6 minutes and 30 seconds, 3:15 with a benificial ability).
However, each has their own strengths and weaknesses. The T-S route allows
you to catch any Pokemon you might have missed, but is slower and you
might run into trainers/pokemon/obstacles (Meaning that Repels are
needed). Not only that, but you might need cut to get through a few
sections swiftly.
The Cycling Road route is abotu on par with Solceon, but you have to
have your bike on the highest speed setting and move around other trainers
on the route. The Solceon route has the benefit of being right next to
the daycare, meaning you can simply pick up and drop off Pokemon when
you need to. Only bad thing is you have to remount your bike if you go
into the daycare.
